they say you only know what you have when it’s gone.
mine isn’t gone, it’s just currently not as accessible as i’d like it to be. what i’m talking about is home. being at university 2 and a half hours away from where i live means i miss home a lot. i’m lucky enough to live in a beautiful town full of friendly faces that i know and love. my family on my dad’s side have lived there all the way back to my great great grandparents and probably further. i’ve also lived there all my life and this means that it’s pretty hard to walk around without seeing someone i know. i adore that. when talking to other people my age that have also moved to university they say they feel the opposite way. they love not knowing anyone and being in a city full of strangers. to me that’s a scary concept.

however, i know that moving away brings incredible opportunities and independence that i wouldn’t have back home (the shopping and food options are insane also). so, although
i miss regular bubble baths, cuddles with my mum and my comfy bed i know that it makes me appreciate home even more when i’m finally back there. i’ve always got something to look forward to.

if i was to ask you about the connection between animals and beauty products you probably wouldn’t think of any immediate correlation between the two. in my opinion, that’s because there doesn’t need to be one. why does a person wearing makeup or even just washing their hair have to have anything to do with animals at all? this is why i decided to start using cruelty free products.

this may sound very ‘hippy’ and expensive but i promise you are wrong. there are many more beauty brands than you would first think that are cruelty-free and affordable. similarly, there are also many that you (or certainly i) assumed would already be cruelty-free that aren’t. i was the most surprised to find out that simple skincare test on animals. researching the products i buy is something i do regularly now. assuming they are ethical isn’t enough. to find out if they're cruelty-free look for the leaping bunny logo on the back and failing that google!

so many alternatives to the products i was using that did test on animals were available and now i’m extremely close to being completely cruelty-free with my products. i don’t think it’s fair to say that you should straight away throw out products that test on animals if you decide to make this change. you spent money (sometimes a lot) on those products and there’s nothing wrong with using them until they run out and then simply not repurchasing them. (in my opinion).

to help inspire and encourage you, some of my favourite cruelty-free products include:
- anastasia beverly hills modern renaissance eyeshadow pallet
- too faced better than sex mascara
- no7 beautifully matte foundation
- nyx lingerie liquid lipstick
- soap and glory supercat eyeliner
- collection lasting perfection concealer
- superdrug vitamin e skincare range
- real techniques brushes
- erm absolutely anything by lush?! (it’s also all vegan)

as i’m not the most experienced in this area being quite a newbie, i’m going to leave some links here to pages on actual cruelty-free blogs. this is where a lot of my findings came from and if you care to look i’d imagine you’d be as surprised as i was with the findings.

full list of companies that don’t test on animals (yaaaay)

even if this post doesn’t convince you to go cruelty-free with the products you buy i hope that it’s at least made you think a bit about the items you use every day without even thinking!

the anxiety solution?
it makes it sound like a maths equation or a recipe. as if you just need to add some things together and the end result will leave you panic free. that’s not what this book does (and i never assumed it would). what this book does do is it gives you some ways and helpful exercises to help control and limit the amount of worry you feel. the obvious ones are all there: exercise, no caffeine, a good sleep pattern and eating foods that help your brain (i’ve never tried to put kale and broccoli into so many meals before). but these things won’t suddenly change the way you think. they will, however, help you feel a bit more on top of life which can be beneficial.

i found the book is most helpful in the way it teaches you about how to allow the voices in your head to be more positive. i’ve taken from it that feeling anxious should be teaching me something about the situations i’m in. i need to listen to what my mind is telling me rather than pushing it out. then once i’ve listened to what it has to say i can answer back and tell it that it’s wrong and that everything is fine. you have to learn to listen but not always accept that the worst will happen. in a moment of complete panic, this can be difficult but i’ve learnt it’s important to breathe and talk myself out of bad thoughts after letting them be there first.

the downside of any self-help for anxiety is that everyone is different. no one feels the same worry or panics. this book can sometimes focus on superficial issues that don’t bother me such as self-esteem on instagram when compared with other women. this doesn’t faze me and my anxieties are down a different route to those. however, everyone can take something from this book when it’s interpreted and used in the correct way. if you take it for what it is, which i see as being suggestions to make things a bit easier, rather than a SOLUTION to the whole problem then this book may be of use to you.

if you have severe anxiety and feel that you need urgent help ring the NHS on 111. if you suspect you have anxiety and need support i would highly recommend going to see a GP. this book should NOT be used as a way to ‘cure’ any level of anxiety but only as a way to see it less negatively.

i hope this was helpful to anyone considering reading this book

the internet is an incredible place.
anyone with access to it is able to create and post content that they want to share with the world. anyone can have their own place on it. and this is mine. the last time i used this space was over a year and a half ago. i’ve now made many of my older posts private and want to change the way i use this space that i used to love. i don’t care anymore if no one reads it because it’s mine and if it’s for my eyes only then that’s fine by me. i’m going to post about things i care about and enjoy rather than things i think people will search for and that will attract views. in all honesty i think i’d prefer it to be more private anyway. so, here’s to a new style of posting, (hopefully) an improvement in my writing and most importantly a positive change in this space for me.

if anyone’s out there reading this maybe i’ll see you back here again soon
